The globally renowned STEAM education event, "FIRST® LEGO® League 2023-2024", lit up the stage as it held its much-anticipated Hong Kong regional finals for the primary and secondary school divisions on July 5th and 6th! Approximately 160 student teams from 69 schools came together to take on the exhilarating challenges of the "MASTERPIECE" season theme. It was a true celebration of creativity, teamwork, and innovation!
The FLL competition consists of three divisions: FLL Discover (4 to 6 years old), FLL Explore (6 to 10 years old), and FLL Challenge (9 to 16 years old). Through different challenges, it aims to stimulate the creativity, engineering design, programming, and problem-solving abilities of preschool and primary school students, providing them with continuous STEAM learning and exchange opportunities.
One Theme, Four Challenges
In the scorching summer, student teams, after receiving their supplies at the registration booth, each chart their own routes, shuttling through the IVE Tsing Yi campus to attend the four major parts of the competition: Innovation Project and Robot Design (through presentations to professional judges), Robot Game (including one practice round and three official rounds, with the highest score taken), and Core Values. Teams were evaluated in these four aspects, and outstanding scores were nominated by the judges for the overall champion, first runner-up, second runner-up, and various section awards.
The season theme MASTERPIECE encourages students to unleash their boundless imagination and creativity, while exploring how to integrate art and STEM elements. The theme's unique characteristics are not only reflected in the design of the robot game field set but also permeated across their project ideas.
The Robot game is the most eye-catching of all. Students work together as a team to strategize, design, build, and program their robots. The robots are required to complete 15 tasks on the field sets within 2.5 minutes, aiming for the highest score of 550 points. In this year's secondary school division, the champion of the Robot Performance Award, Fung Kai Liu Man Shek Tong Secondary School, achieved an impressive score of 500 points in their debut competition in the Hong Kong regiona. This achievement is truly inspiring.
In the presentation session, the judges were impressed by the creativity and attention to detail shown by the students. Many teams used technology to promote and preserve traditional culture. For instance, some students created an augmented reality (AR) app that allows users to learn classical poetry interactively on their mobile devices. Others developed a virtual reality (VR) game that immerses players in the experience of lion dance performances. Additionally, students used live streaming technology to showcase the charm of traditional Chinese orchestral performances to the world. These innovative technologies have revitalized traditional culture and become valuable tools for cultural preservation. The judges hope that these creative projects can continue to evolve into practical and beneficial solutions for society.
Living the spirit of Gracious Professionalism
We noticed teams cheering for their teammates, which brought us joy! Students, who may be from different grades and classes, come together as FLL teams without knowing each other beforehand. FLL gives them a shared goal and an opportunity to practice the core values of FIRST®: respect, fun, and teamwork.
Gracious Professionalism, the noble value of FIRST®, is an attitude and a way of learning. It encourages high-quality work and emphasizes the value of others. Students show respect to individuals and communities. While competing against each other, students learn and improve by observing other teams' performances and appreciating their robot designs and strategies. They also find inspiration and unity within their own team as they witness the bonds formed by others. In this spirit, FLL® collaborates with everyone to create a competitive and mutually beneficial learning environment.
