【Event Recap】micro:bit Model Rocket Car Competition 2023-2024

The micro:bit Model Rocket Car Competition 2023-2024 was held successfully on May 18th, thanks to the support of Kwun Tong Kung Lok Government Secondary School. This competition brought together primary and secondary school students from 50 teams, creating an atmosphere of excitement as the rocket cars raced against each other for speed!

We express our sincere gratitude to Kwun Tong Kung Lok Government Secondary School for providing the venue and assistance, which ensured a smooth competition and award ceremony. Special thanks go to Mr. Ng Tsz Chung of Kwun Tong Kung Lok Government Secondary School, for being the esteemed guest of honor at the awards ceremony and for offering support and encouragement to the winning students.

Creating a Streamlined Rocket Car to Break Through Air Resistance

During the competition, students collaborated within a limited 90-minute time frame to construct streamlined rocket cars and compete for the fastest speed. They demonstrated their design skills by sketching lines on the car body and using a hot-wire cutter for cutting. Polishing the body with sandpaper was also crucial to reduce friction and improve the rocket cars' speed by minimizing air resistance.

Components such as axles and wheels played a vital role in the assembly process of the car body. Students used tools like pliers and hammers repeatedly, testing their endurance as they assembled the wheel components. Some teams even brought their own 3D-printed wheels, aiming to reduce weight and potentially enhance the speed of their rocket cars through these small differences.

Adding Unique Design to the Vehicle to Create an Exclusive Rocket Car

The competition also featured a Design Award, highlighting the artistic elements in STEAM learning. Each team showcased their artistic creativity by adding unique art designs to their rocket cars. They used various art tools to create visually appealing designs, emphasizing the importance of artistic expression in their creations.

Competing with Students across HK for the Championship Title of the Year

As the staff ignited the propellant, the competition reached its most thrilling phase, with the rocket cars built by the participating teams zooming off at impressive speeds. In the end, Team NO.1 火箭 from Yuen Long Merchants Association Primary School and Team 永光書院50周年生日快樂 from PHC Wing Kwong College emerged as the champions in the primary and secondary school group, respectively. PHC Wing Kwong College achieved a notable feat by securing the Champion, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up in the secondary school group, establishing themselves as the most successful participants in the competition.

The rocket car competition provided students with valuable hands-on learning experiences in science, engineering, and art, while also fostering teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills. It ignited students' interest in STEAM subjects and encouraged active engagement in the STEAM field. We look forward to the participation of these talented students in next year's competition!
