【Event Recap】Edition AHPS,HKCCCC micro:bit Model Rocket Car Competition 2023-2024

The Edition AHPS,HKCCCC of micro:bit Model Rocket Car Competition 2023-2024 was successfully held on March 27, 2024.Organized by The Association of Heads of Primary Schools (AHPS), The Hong Kong Council of The Church of Christ in China (HKCCCC) and Trumptech, this exciting competition garnered support and participation from 16 schools, with over 60 enthusiastic primary school students marveling at the rocket cars propelled by gunpowder. Together they achieved a remarkable feat by breaking the record for the fastest rocket car!

We are delighted and privileged to have Dr. Ngok Huen Siu, the President of Three Cares Education, as our esteemed guest for the award presentation. Dr. Siu extended his recognition and encouragement to the accomplished students who have excelled in the STEAM competition. We would also like to express our sincere gratitude to CCC Heep Woh Primary School (Cheung Sha Wan) for their gracious provision of the venue and valuable assistance, which greatly contributed to the seamless execution of the competition and the success of the award ceremony.

Designing the fastest rocket car within a limited timeframe

The competition requires students to work together with their teammates to build a streamlined rocket car within a limited time of 90 minutes. The goal is to ensure that the rocket car completes the race with the fastest possible speed!

During the process of designing the car body, students pre-marked lines on the body and carefully cut them using a hot-wire cutter. Finally, they vigorously polished the car body with sandpaper, aiming to create the smoothest surface possible to reduce friction.

During the assembly of the car body, students carefully fitted various components into place, including the axles and wheels. Some students even trimmed away the excess material from the wheels to reduce weight, hoping that these subtle differences will enhance the speed of the rocket car!

The competition also included a Design Award, highlighting the art element within STEAM learning. Each team showcased their artistic creativity by adding unique art designs to their rocket cars. The abundance of art tools demonstrated their appreciation for the artistic component of the competition!

The outcome being decided in just 0.2 milliseconds

The staff members ignited the gunpowder, propelling the rocket cars crafted by each team. With great anticipation, all the participating students witnessed the rocket cars soar forward at incredible speed, filling them with joy and excitement! In the end, the teams from CCC Kei Wan Primary School (Aldrich Bay) and CCC Kei Tsun Primary School won the prestigious honors of champions and 1st runner-up with outstanding times of 32.6 milliseconds and 32.8 milliseconds respectively. It was truly remarkable to see how even the slightest difference can greatly impact the outcome of the competition!
