The competition was organised by Trumptech, SenseTime and Hong Kong Association of Computer Education (HKACE), which aim to motivate students to learn to code and to brush up their computational thinking through the CodeN'Sim Online Coding platform and O2O coding challenges. We are honoured to have 58 primary schools participating in the competition qualifying stage, with 30 schools entering the final. With 1-3 students in a team, the competition has engaged over 170 students, not to mention that selected coding activities were accessible grade-wide for the participating schools to create a broader code-learning experience.
The Qualifying Stage
From 28 June to 9 July, the teams had to complete 12 coding missions on the CodeN'Sim Platform. Based on the accumulated score and the minimum attempt count of the missions, 30 best-performing teams were selected for the finals.
The Final
The final was held at SKH Kei Fook Primary School on 17 July. All finalists were requested to finish a number of online missions and offline challenges. They could use various measuring tools to collect information on the mission map, for instance, the distance between checkpoints and the angle of turns. With these numbers, they need to program the robot with the use of a block-based language Scratch. These altogether put the teams to the test of their computational thinking, problem-solving and collaboration skills!
After the final, an experiential workshop on artificial intelligence was held to provide teachers and students with the fundamental knowledge of this cutting-edge technology. They built their smart recycling device and trained a basic model on item recognition.
Dr Zhang Yang, Deputy Director of Educational Business of SenseTime also shared about the application of artificial intelligence in reality. With interesting case studies, the sharing guided students to reflect and brainstorm about the possibility of AI technology in creating a better future.
